What makes a study of First Corinthians of such importance for believers today – is the way in which the Apostle Paul who wrote it – addresses the same problems that plague our modern churches. One of the issues Paul targets in his epistle is one of division among believers.

Unity in the Church is what makes it strong. When fractured, all manner of problems develop and results in members turning against each other. What’s abundantly clear from Scripture - as well as our own experience is that Satan stands ready to exploit the fickleness of our loyalty to God create divide in our congregations.

One of the key ways he does this is through the hero worship - in the manner that had plagued the Corinthian congregation. The issue of idolising a particular leader over another to the point of division has troubled the Church since its conception.

Whenever an unhealthy dependency is placed on a leader, co-dependency develops and God begins to take second place in our relationship over another. The rise of celebrity Christianity has grown this problem to untenable levels, resulting in leadership idolatry where loyalty becomes more about a leader than God.

What is apparent in such a scenario, is that any leader - no matter how gifted - is a poor substitute to the pure source of truth which can only come through a growing faith in Christ Jesus.

In this teaching, Jeremy draws from First Corinthians chapters 1 and 3 to highlight the dangers of unhealthy leadership idolatry before offering its corrective.

Key topics covered, include:
The basis of church unity
Common causes of congregational division
The dangers of sectarianism in the Church and leadership idolatry
The role of Christian leaders as servant-leaders
The apostolic foundation of the Church and how it is built upon
What constitutes a balanced model of Christian leadership
Correctives to unhealthy leadership loyalty
