Biblical Principles Combined with Knowledge from Latest Medical Research to Provide a Practical Tool for the Healing Ministry:
God is very clear in His Word that it is His desire to heal His people (Psalm 103 v 3). When Jesus died on the cross, He accomplished two things which are symbolized when we celebrate communion - we take the cup of wine which represents His blood which was shed for the forgiveness of sins (Matthew 8 v 28) and we take the bread which represents His body which was broken, so that by His stripes we could be healed and made whole (Isaiah 53 v 5, Matt hew 8 v 17). So born again children of God have a covenant of healing and divine health! Furthermore God has given the pastors and church leadership a mandate to care for the health and welfare of their flock (James 5 v 14-15).
A large survey was done in churches across the world to find out how many people are actually healed of their diseases aft er being prayed for. The result world-wide (regardless of church denomination) was between 2 and 5%. Less than 5%! Although there is healing and a covenant of divine health that is available to every child of God, stati sti cally there is no difference between Christians and unbelievers when it comes to disease. There are just as many Christi ans in doctors’, psychiatrists and psychologists offices as there are unbelievers.
The members of congregations in churches across the world are plagued with biological disease and psychological problems and because the church does not seem to have many real answers (because hardly anybody is being healed), they have turned to the world for help.
Today psychologists have become the “pastors” of this world and the doctors, the healers.
Although there is a place for the medical profession, the worldly doctors, psychologists and psychiatrists of today are the result of the frustration of the failure of the Church and its leadership to perform its Scriptural mandate in pastoral care. God’s children are perishing and many pastors seem to be doing nothing about it. Ezekiel chapter 34 and Jeremiah 23 v 1 – 4 provide a stinging rebuke to God’s pastors who have failed to take care of the sick in their flock.
The problem is that we do not understand disease, even from a Biblical perspective. Isaiah 5 v 13-14 and Hosea 4 v 6 say that we have gone into captivity and are perishing because of our lack of knowledge. For many years in ministry, the subject of disease and healing (and why people are not healed) has not been fully understood. In their ignorance most pastors are farming out their people to the world’s system of professionals because they have not mastered the understanding of health and disease in the Bible for themselves. God’s people are being sent to the world for help when the answers are right there in the Word of God to set them free.
As believers we have been given a mandate to preach the Gospel, heal the sick, cast out their devils and unselfishly lay down our lives for others as outlined in Isaiah 58, Luke 9, Luke 10 and Mark 16. A day is coming when we will be asked to give an account for those
whom God has brought into our lives to lead and how we have fulfilled the mandate given to us (Ezekiel 34 v 10). God gives an awesome responsibility to pastors and the church and has mandated that WE be the healers of the sick, the ones who bind up the wounds and heal the brokenhearted (Isaiah 61 v 1). For this reason He has established the equipping of the saints for ministry - He has given us the gift s of discerning of spirits, of healing and of miracles, that His flock may be tended, healed and delivered.
This book serves to train and equip those in church leadership and those with a heart for the healing ministry (including Christian doctors and others in the healthcare team) with the
“tools of the trade” so that we can responsibly care for the body of Christ according to the Biblical mandate given and minister in a way that is effective with high impact!
