And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? (Matthew 24:3)
The Olivet Discourse is named thus because Jesus was teaching His Jewish disciples on the Mount of Olives facing the Temple. What is the context of this teaching? Where is the Church at this point in time? What were the factors that led the Lord to make this teaching?
Have you been taught that the “Olivet Discourse” concerns the Church and conditions of the world prior to Jesus’ 2nd Coming? And that the key to Jesus’ return depends on the Church accomplishing the Great Commission (Matt.28: 19-20) in Matt.24: 14?
Setting the proper context of the “Olivet Discourse” will help you understand the “Last Days” as it should be understood. Jesus was speaking to a Jewish audience who asked a specific question regarding the “signs” of Jesus’ “coming” and the “end of the age” (a better translation than “world”).
We need to explore the mindset of the Jewish audience, and from Old Testament scriptures in order to understand our Lord’s teaching. We also need to review the preceding events in Matthew 23 that prompted the questions. Jesus’ teaching drew heavily from the Old Testament prophets, particularly Daniel 9:26-27.
This talk will clarify the Olivet Discourse teaching from the proper perspective of the Jewish audience. You will begin to see how events are shaping up.
How do we know the “signs” leading to Jesus Second Coming?
