The desire for order, certainty and control is part of everyday human experience. However, for some people, these desires become so intense that they cause significant distress, impair relationships and restrict daily life. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) are often confused because they sound alike and  both seemingly involve overlapping mindsets and behaviours.
Yet they are distinct conditions with different patterns of thinking, emotional experiences and clinical outcomes.

This talk will shed light on the unique characteristics of OCD and OCPD, while stressing the spiritual dimensions of each of these conditions.
Through clinical examples, the presentation will explore how these conditions may affect work, family life, relationships, decision-making and personal faith.

We will also explore how themes such as fear, guilt, perfectionism, and the longing for control may be understood within a Christian framework, while avoiding the harmful assumption that these mental health conditions are the result of moral failure and the lack of will power.

Evidence based psychiatric and psychological treatments will be discussed, but equally important is the need to consider the role of the church in providing spiritual counsel and support for those afflicted.

When the desire for certainty and control begin to control us, it is the integration of clinical treatment, psychological interventions and pastoral care which can contribute to genuine freedom and hope.
