In a turbulent world the Christian is often urged to pray for the peace of Jerusalem. But what does it really mean?
Since Man's fall in the Garden of Eden, God's plan was to redeem Mankind & reclaim the world from the grip of Satan. Satan became the god & ruler of this world when Adam forfeited the right to rule on God's behalf through disobedience by eating from the Tree of Good & Evil. Sin entered into Adam & his descendants, the human race. God expounded His plan in Genesis 3:15 through the "Seed of Eve" Who would crush the head of the Serpent.
The Bible tells us that this would be fulfilled by Jesus Christ in two stages. At Jesus' First Advent, He dealt with Man's sin problem. Being the perfect Man, our Kinsman-Redeemer, Jesus, took our sins in exchange for His righteousness if we would but believe in Him & His work on the Cross. Satan had been exposed & judged at the Cross. However, Satan's sentencing to the Abyss, then to the Lake of Fire would only occur at Jesus' Second Advent.
God's selection of Abram, later Abraham, started the redemption process. The "Seed of Eve,"Jesus, must come through Abraham, through Isaac, Jacob & his twelve sons, (twelve tribes), collectively called Israel. The line is specific: Ishmael and Esau are excluded, though closely related. At His Second Advent Jesus will return to rule the world in, and from Jerusalem in Israel. "Zion" is mentioned 152 times in the KJV. Each time it refers to Jerusalem, specifically the Fourth Temple, where Jesus will reign from His throne on Earth. From Zion Jesus will reign as King of kings, & LORD of Lords over the world. This biblical teaching is known as "Zionism."
In this lesson, you will begin to understand the plan of God from Genesis to Revelation. "Zionism" is not merely a Jewish desire for a homeland, as is commonly misunderstood. It's the fulfillment of God's redemption plan of the world from the Abrahamic Covenant to the Davidic Covenant. "Zionism" is not for Israel alone but for the entire world. As we see the world in turmoil, and Israel & the Middle East again in focus as never before, can you see the hand of God directing events to this fulfillment? Praying for the peace of Jerusalem really means aligning our desire with God's plan to have Jesus reign in the Millennial Kingdom, "Thy Kingdom Come..." There's a blessing for those who yearn for this in the second part of the verse: "...they shall prosper that love thee." (Psalm 122:6)“How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” — 1 John 3:1
